Ryan Howzell is the Research Program Coordinator at PEN America, where she supports and manages all long-form research from the organization's Free Expression and Literary Departments. At PEN America, she specializes in work that explores the intersections of ethnicity, identity, and free expression in the publishing industry, newsrooms, and online. Prior to her current role, Ryan served as a independent consultant to PEN America, co-authoring the 2022 report, Hate in the Headlines: Journalism & the Challenge of Extremism.
As a researcher, Ryan has worked with the City and County of San Francisco, Yale Law School, Asylum Access, The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting. In 2021 and 2022, she was a reporting fellow at San Francisco's KALW Public Radio.
